Special Education Programs
The Opportunity program at Weinlos School supports students in grades 1 to 6 who have mild cognitive disabilities and significant academic delays, to gain skills for future independent living and employment. These classrooms have thirteen students, with a full time teacher and an Educational Assistant.
The positive and supportive learning environment in the Opportunity program provides a slower pace of instruction with an emphasis on literacy and math. The class size is smaller allowing for more targeted instruction. Instruction is flexible based on students’ needs and abilities, with the use of visual aids, specific examples and hands-on activities as needed.
Weinlos School is also a designated district site for the Behaviour and Learning Assistance Program (BLA) for Grades 1 to 6. These classrooms have a maximum of eight students, with a full time teacher and an Educational Assistant. The BLA program supports students displaying chronic, extreme and pervasive behaviours. Students require close and constant adult supervision and a high level of structure to function in an educational setting.
The structured classroom environment provides predictable and clearly articulated routines, procedures, expectations and schedules. The program goals include academic success as well as developing and demonstrating positive behaviour and social skills. Opportunities are available to join other classes for instruction in a student’s area of strength and for physical education and music.
